Investing in a Generation of Transformational Leaders

We are developing a generation of leaders to transform lives, strengthen institutions, and uplift communities from within.

About LéO Africa Institute

About the LéO Africa Institute

An independent organization cultivating a new generation of transformational leaders across the African continent.

Founded in 2012, the LéO Africa Institute — Swahili for "Today's Africa" — is an independent organization dedicated to cultivating a new generation of transformational leaders who catalyze positive, lasting change across the continent. Through its work, the Institute is building a critical mass of individuals committed to transforming lives, strengthening institutions, and uplifting communities from within.

The Institute was born from the shared vision of two friends, Awel Uwihanganye and Magnus Mchunguzi, who recognized Africa's immense growth potential and believed that ethical, values-based leadership must be at the heart of the continent's renaissance. What sets LéO Africa apart is its conviction that this leadership must be authentically African, shaped by African voices, rooted in African values, and driven by Africans themselves.

Awel Uwihanganye

Awel Uwihanganye

Co-Founder & Chief Executive

Awel Uwihanganye is a Co-Founder of the LéO Africa Institute and currently serves as the Chief Executive, leading everyday management at the Institute Secretariat. He is an accomplished management specialist and leadership coach with expertise in executive management, communications and public relations, resource mobilization, diplomacy, and leadership development.

As the Co-Founder and Chief Executive of the LéO Africa Institute, Awel has built one of the continent's most distinctive platforms for leadership development and ideas exchange. A founder of several change initiatives, he is deeply passionate about entrepreneurship and the power of ideas to transform lives, shape society, and advance development.

He envisions Africa as a frontier for opportunity and growth — with a confident, self-aware generation of rising African leaders at the center of its renaissance.

Awel is a proud alumnus of Concordia University in Montreal, Canada, a fellow of the African Leadership Initiative — East Africa, and a member of the Aspen Institute's Global Leadership Network.

"When you commit yourself to do good, create value, innovate, and serve society, a lot of good follows. My contribution to the cause of Africa, humanity, and the world has come with a lot of opportunities and accolades, which in turn challenge me to do more."

Magnus Mchunguzi

Magnus Mchunguzi

Co-Founder & Board Chairman

Magnus Mchunguzi is a Co-Founder of the LéO Africa Institute and currently serves as the Chair of its Board of Directors, bringing seasoned executive leadership and a deep commitment to Africa's development to the Institute's work.

With over two decades of experience in the telecommunications industry, Magnus has built a distinguished career spanning the African continent. He has held senior leadership positions at some of the world's most recognized corporations — including MTN, Siemens, and Ericsson — where he helped shape the growth of connectivity and technology across key markets.

Following an illustrious corporate career, Magnus stepped back from executive life to pursue entrepreneurial interests, channeling the same strategic acumen and drive into building ventures of his own. Despite a demanding schedule as a businessman, he remains deeply committed to a life of service — investing his time, experience, and networks into initiatives that create lasting value for society.

At the LéO Africa Institute, Magnus brings the perspective of a builder: someone who understands what it takes to grow institutions, develop talent, and create the conditions in which Africa's next generation of leaders can thrive.

Leadership & Governance

The People Behind the Mission

The LéO Africa Institute is guided by a committed Board of Directors, powered by a dedicated Secretariat, and enriched by a distinguished Faculty — together driving the Institute's mission to cultivate transformational leaders across the continent.

Our Approach

Philosophy & Programs

Rooted in African values and driven by a commitment to ethical leadership development.

Agaciro — Our Core Philosophy

Central to its philosophy is the principle of Agaciro — a Kinyarwanda word embodying dignity, self-worth, and African identity. This concept anchors the Institute's approach: empowering leaders not just with skills, but with a deep sense of purpose, agency, and responsibility.

Programs & Fellowships

LéO Africa invests in human capital development through the Young & Emerging Leaders Project (YELP), the Huduma Fellowship for civic and public sector champions, and its Annual Leaders Gathering — a signature convening platform for transformative dialogue.

A Growing Network

Our network spans multiple African countries, connecting passionate, driven leaders who are turning possibility into reality. With Africa home to the world's youngest population, LéO Africa believes that ideas matter and networks multiply impact.

A Continent of Potential

The Challenge & Opportunity

With an estimated 30% of the world's mineral reserves and an unprecedented natural resource endowment in general, a home market of 1.2 billion and growing, exponential growth in infrastructure and technology, and with the youngest population in the world, Africa stands at the greatest point of opportunity.
